Each string in a piano is pulled to roughly 160 to 200 pounds of tension, and there are over 220 strings in a standard piano. Why Do Pinblocks Fail—
In Toronto, the extreme seasonal humidity swings are the natural enemy of the pinblock. During the humid summer months, the wood absorbs moisture and swells, gripping the pins tighter. During the harsh, dry winter months when indoor heating systems run constantly, the wood dries out and shrinks, pulling away from the pins. For high-quality, valuable instruments (like vintage Steinway, Mason & Hamlin, or Bechstein grands), the only correct, long-term solution is a complete pinblock replacement. This is a major rebuilding job that requires removing the heavy cast-iron plate from the piano. A new pinblock is custom-fitted and glued in place, followed by a brand-new set of strings and tuning pins.
